There is nothing wrong with changing things up a bit.

Today we’re going to focus on something a little different. Instead of sharing tips or thoughts on an innovation topic, we’re going to provide a pep talk for those of you in the corporate innovation space who might be feeling a bit worn down.

We’ve all been there, and it can be tiring to constantly take on the role of the agent of change. Sometimes we just need a reminder of why we do what we do, and why we love doing it.

We currently live in a world where a mother can go to a grocery store in Seattle, put all the groceries in a cart, walk out of the building and drive away with them. This might sound like shoplifting, but it’s now the checkout process – an exciting prospect. We also live in a world in which a house – an entire house – can be printed in less than 24 hours. The possibilities of 3D printing are endless, and it’s immensely exciting to see what they’ll lead to.

We also live in a world where cars can sense whether they’re turning or driving straight, and can adjust their shape to optimize speed and safety. This technology is incredible, and it’s exciting to think about what else we can do with that kind of technology. Our cells can now also be modified genetically to fight cancer, a treatment that is providing positive results for people.

If you feel tired or worn down when facing obstacles in terms of building a corporate innovation program or driving change within your organization, take a moment and read up on the many other amazing things happening in our world right now. Reflect on the possibilities of technology and the opportunities and disruption they allow. This is why many of us got into innovation in the first place, and it’s nice to remind ourselves of those possibilities and the advancements we’re making. It’s energizing to consider all the areas we can play, invest, and explore with innovation.
